Dear Mogen David Family,

If we take a close look into the pesukim which command us to make a Beracha Acharona of Birchat HaMazon, and then we compare and analyze those ideas within the format of the Berachot we recite in Birchat HaMazon, we are left with many questions.

"V'achalta v'sava'ata u'berachta et Hashem Elokecha al ha'arezt hatova Asher natan lach..."

There is a clear connection between the Land of Israel that we received from Hashem and our identifying Hashem as the 'Zan et HaKol,' the sustainer of all human beings. We thank Hashem specifically for certain kinds of food--lechem (bread), most fundamentally, and the shiva'at haminim, the seven unique species of food which praise Eretz Yisrael, specifically.

But if we match up these ideas with Birchat HaMazon we see very deliberate themes emerge. Our special Brit, relationship or covenant, is established with our Creator and is expressed in our relationship with our food and sustenance, our Land (Israel), the building and rebuilding of Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh and, of course, our Torah and Mitzvot.

What the Chachamim are telling us is that we must make an all-encompassing connection with Hashem--through our people, our Torah, our country. Even material and physical actions such as eating and earning a livelihood, must express our knowledge of Hashem's mastery over the world and the blessings we receive daily.

As we read Parashat Ekev let us try to be more aware of the blessings we receive and of our special covenant with the Ribinno shel Olam is each and every thing we attempt and accomplish. The best 'alarm clock' to remind us is when we make berachot throughout our day, primarily through the Mitzvah min HaTorah of Birchat HaMazon.
